Students can learn Korean culture and language at the University of Tartu
In the spring semester of the academic year 2013/2014, a guest lecturer from South Korea, Ms. Hyun Jung Shin starts teaching courses on Korean culture (FLKU.10.023) and Korean language (FLKE.05.083) at the Faculty of Philosophy. She was selected for this mission by the Academy of Korean Studies (http://intl.aks.ac.kr/english/portal.php) in the framework of Education Enhancement Program for Korean Studies: Overseas Korean Studies Incubation Program.
She has been teaching Korean language for nearly fifteen years and has taught Korean language for foreigners at the Korean Language Institute of the Yonsei University (http://www.yonsei.ac.kr/eng/about/overview/) since 2006.
Ms. Hyun Jung Shin is a linguist by her academic training. As she studied Czech and Slovak languages during her BA studies she had additional training in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where she grew interested in the Eastern European region. She says she had been dreaming of finding a teaching position somewhere in Eastern Europe for a few years already when she discovered the offer by the Academy of Korean Studies. She responded immediately, was selected, and has been in Estonia for a month by now.
Although she did not have any prior contacts with Estonia and the Estonian language, she finds the country – and Tartu in particular – with its clear air and quiet environment a nice place to live and work in.
