University of Tartu day celebrated at Vilnius University
Wednesday, 27 April 2016 at Vilnius University is dedicated to the University of Tartu—the University of Tartu day is celebrated for the first time.
On this day, UT is highlighted by public lectures and researchers and lecturers are discussing cooperation possibilities at faculty meetings. The Science Bus (Teadusbuss) has driven all the way from Tartu to greet the students of Vilnius University and introduce the options for research popularisation, information is also given on opportunities to study in Tartu.
In the morning, the nearly 20-member UT delegation will see the new science and technology campus and the new library of Vilnius University. Rector Professor Volli Kalm will give a presentation to introduce UT to our Lithuanian partners.
According to Birute Klaas-Lang, Professor of Estonian as a Foreign Language and the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Estonia, there is close cooperation between UT and Vilnius University in language studies. Vilnius University has taught Estonian as a double specialisation combined with the Lithuanian language since 2002, currently the lecturer in Estonian language there is Eve Raeste. “The presentations by us and our Lithuanian partners and the discussion in the Faculty of Philology focus on how to popularise teaching small languages in universities abroad. We have a plan to join forces with Vilnius University in teaching Finno-Ugric and Baltic languages and develop shared teaching modules. Estonian language studies abroad are like a window to Estonia, because afterwards, many students come here as exchange students, to participate in the summer university or do their master’s studies. This is very important for Estonia’s internationalisation and it strengthens Estonia’s positive image in the world,” said Klaas-Lang.
During the day, UT researchers and lecturers will meet with partners at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Philology, Faculty of Economics and Faculty of History. Senior Research Fellow in Sinology Märt Läänemets will give a presentation at the Vilnius University Centre of Oriental Studies.
In the afternoon, Volli Kalm and Vice Rector for Research Marco Kirm will participate in the meeting of the rectors of three universities, together with the Rector of Vilnius University Artūras Žukauskas and the Rector of the University of Latvia Indriķis Muižnieks.
The day ends with a reception at the Estonian Embassy.
