Tartu 2024 full programme to be revealed today

The full programme of Tartu 2024 is announced on 19 October, exactly one hundred days before the beginning of the year of the European Capital of Culture. The University of Tartu supports the activities of the Capital of Culture and the programme includes various events organised by the university.

The artistic concept of the Capital of Culture focuses on the Arts of Survival: the knowledge, skills and values that help us live better in the future and that we want to learn more about and share with Europe. Four of the most important of these, and also reflected in the Tartu 2024 programme, are uniqueness, sustainability, awareness and co-creation.

Several events in the main programme are organised by the University of Tartu.

The Arts of Survival Creative Nature Festival will make visitors take notice of the biodiversity around us, exploring the links between nature and culture in urban spaces and enjoying nature-inspired creations. The festival is organised by the University of Tartu Natural History Museum and the Botanic Garden.

The Heritage Festival takes visitors to Viljandi, UNESCO’s Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts, or Heritage City. The festival will discuss how knowledge of folk arts and crafts can help us find sustainable solutions to economic and environmental issues, and give an opportunity for people to learn heritage skills. The Heritage Festival is organised by the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy.

Kissing Tartu will include an educational programme and concert performance, and will culminate in an unprecedented mass kissing event. The concert performance takes place at Tartu Town Hall Square on 18 May. The University of Tartu’s alumni get-together will also be held on the same day. The organisers of Kissing Tartu is the Tartu Student Club and University of Tartu Youth Academy.

Tartu World University is a series of community academies, which seek solutions to global problems. The organiser is the University of Tartu Centre for Ethics.

Toomemägi Revisited will use culture, science and light to revive Toome Hill, the important central place for the city of Tartu. Visitors can walk between the cathedral ruins and enjoy a holistic light show. The event is organised by the University of Tartu Museum.

The opening event takes place in Aparaaditehas in Tartu, today from 19 to 21. Estonian TV will broadcast the show live. More information is available on the website of Tartu 2024 https://tartu2024.ee/en/reveal/.
