New course open for registration

Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore has offered regular classes of folkloristics in English, mainly oriented towards MA and PhD students but open to all. Specialists from Tartu Literature Archive, as well as BA students are also welcome.

New optional course open for registration: FLKU.04.141 The vernacular system of taboos in speech genres, folk texts and social practices (3 ECTS), Aleksandra Arkhipova (Russian State University for the Humanities).

Time: 12th October 2015 – 2nd November 2015 (6 lectures and 1 seminar)

The course is aimed:

* to present different approaches in the areas of sociolinguistics and folklore studies - how we can apply the different methods for studying the taboos;
* to investigate why the different types of communities (nomadic, rural and industrial) need the vernacular practices of tabooing;
* to elucidate how the new cultural meanings and structures appear in the current social process of tabooing and de-tabooing in post-socialistic societies, and as a result, how in some cases it affects the social behaviour of former Soviet citizens.

The lectures are based on the materials collected during the field work in different regions of Central Russia, South Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Cuba (2006- 2015).
