University of Tartu Linguistics is among the top 200 in the world

The results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject have just been published and Linguistics achieved a particularly outstanding result among the fields of research at the University of Tartu.

Linguistics has been in the top 200 in the prestigious QS ranking for two consecutive years. Academic quality, citations and a high H-index underlie the placement in the high 150-200 range for Linguistics. In addition, the high international academic reputation had a great impact on the ranking.

The impressive table position is joyful news for the entire academic family of the institute. Professor Liina Lindström, head of the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics, commented on the worthy result: "It's fantastic that our efforts to do world-class linguistics stand out in the rankings too. Researching and teaching Estonian language and other Finno-Ugric languages is our priority, and it's wonderful that we excel in this."

The Institute of Estonian Language and General Linguistics of the University of Tartu deals with teaching linguistics and conducting language research using the latest methodology. The focus is on the Estonian language, but at the same time, the institute has also developed into one of the leading research centers for Finno-Ugric languages in the world.

This year, the University of Tartu is represented in the QS ranking by 15 subjects, with three subjects among the first 200. Linguistics was the only field of research in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities to achieve such a high place in the table.

It is also worth drawing attention to the strong results of the entire faculty since the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is once again in the highest place among the faculties of the University of Tartu.
