Fund established with Kadri Rõuk’s legacy to advance research on the Estonian language
The University of Tartu’s endowment fund received 1.6 million euros from the bequest of expatriate Estonian Kadri Rõuk. This amount was used to establish the Rõuk Family Estonian Language Fund, which will advance and develop research on the Estonian language and teaching Estonian language and linguistics at the University of Tartu.

The role of hunting and gathering in rapid population growth will be reconsidered with support from European Research Council
As part of a European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant project, archaeologist Mari Tõrv from the University of Tartu will study how hunter-gatherers across the Northern hemisphere achieved significant population growth and social complexity long before agriculture and cattle farming became the dominating way of life. Tõrv’s research team will contribute to the project with material analysis from the Baltic region.

The 14th International Finno-Ugric Congress drew attention to the situation of the South Estonian Language
The 14th International Finno-Ugric Congress (Congressus Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum or CIFU) took place at the University of Tartu from 18–23 August 2025, bringing together nearly 300 participants from 20 different countries.

On 27 October from 13–18, the University of Tartu development conference “A university for us, Estonia and the world” took place in the university assembly hall and online. Keynote speakers were Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Kersti Kaljulaid and Kristina Kallas.
Young researchers were awarded at the MEDAL final conference
From 8–10 October, the final conference of MEDAL (Methodological Excellence in Data-Driven Approaches to Linguistics) took place. At the end of the conference, the best young researchers were announced.

On 2 October, the UT Vice Rector for Research Mari Moora and Professor of Cell Biology Toivo Maimets met with the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Zdeněk Beránek, the Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Studies of Masaryk University Šárka Pospíšilová and Professor Michael Doubek.
